Privacy policy

TramWatch is designed to provide useful community information while collecting as little personal data as possible.

Information we process

We process live tram information supplied by Transport Victoria, the public tram stop selected in a community report, and the time and route of each report. If you opt in to Web Push, TramWatch stores an anonymous push subscription, a one-way hash of a browser-only management token, and your chosen route and optional direction preferences. If you also enable nearby alerts, your current position is converted into an approximately 100 metre grid area before storage. Exact device location and location history are never stored.

Anonymous safety identifier

When you submit a report, the app creates a random identifier on your device. We store a one-way hash of that identifier to limit spam and allow other users to block reports from the same source. It is not intended to identify you.

Abuse prevention

For report, review, support and notification-setting requests, TramWatch stores a salted one-way hash derived from ordinary network address information. The raw address is not written to the TramWatch database. These short-lived counters expire after their rate-limit window.

Retention

Community sightings automatically expire after 10 minutes. A nearby-alert coarse area expires within 30 minutes and expired areas are deleted. Notification subscriptions and route preferences are retained until you disable them or the push provider reports that they are no longer valid. Delivery records used to prevent duplicate alerts are retained for no more than 24 hours. Support messages and any optional reply email are retained for no more than 90 days.

Permissions

Location is optional and is used only when you choose My location or enable or refresh nearby alerts. Background nearby alerts use the most recent coarse location captured while the web app was open. Notification permission is requested only after you press Enable notifications.

Your choices

You can use the live tram map without location or notification permission. You can disable one route, nearby alerts, or all notifications at any time. You can also block a report source, flag inaccurate content, clear this app’s local data, or request deletion of a support message through the support page.

Hosting, logs and third-party services

Cloudflare hosts the app and database and may process ordinary network and security metadata. TramWatch application code does not log request bodies, secrets, push endpoints, or device coordinates. Map tiles are provided by OpenStreetMap contributors, live vehicle data originates from Transport Victoria, and your browser's push provider delivers notifications. Those providers may process ordinary network information when their services are used.

Children

TramWatch is a general-audience travel information service and is not directed to children under 13.
